About Porto Alegre

Porto Alegre is the capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in southern Brazil. This city overlooks Lake Guaíba, where five different rivers converge. Lagoa dos Patos", which is a large lagoon parallel to the coast, is located to the south. The inhabitants of this state are called gaúchos and the traditional herbal tea is mate. What to do Porto Alegre?

Visitors can tour the main square, Praça Marechal Deodoro, where lies the Renaissance style "Catedral Metropolitana" church which has religious murals on its exterior, as well as the Piratini Palace, home of the executive power, built in a neoclassical style. Moinhos de Vento Park, located in the neighborhood of the same name, has walking and jogging trails, children's attractions, a large lake for boating and a children's library. Farroupilha Park is the most traditional and popular park and the locals visit it all the time. If you love souvenirs and tasting the local food of the place you are visiting, then the Porto Alegre Public Market is a must. It is the historical and cultural heritage of the city that offers a variety of traditional food stalls and commercial establishments, and access to it is completely free of charge.

"Morro de Santa Teresa" is one of the highest points in Porto Alegre overlooking a large part of the city and the Guaíba River. It takes 2 hours to get to the most popular beaches, such as Ipanema, Lami and Piedra Redonda.
